Term's Coining and Purpose
Midcontinuum is a term coined by the Vickis in 1997 because, in their own words, "one of the things we would like to do is start collecting peoples' descriptions of what it is like to be dissociative, especially for those who do not fit all the DID diagnostic criteria... midcontinuum folks, like us" (1997 January 25).
This should not be taken as a statement that midcontinuum is for dissociatives only. Vickis also stated "we begin to wonder whether 'plurality' and 'dissociation' are actually two different things. And we take as our starting point that plurality is not the problem" (1998, January 15).
The Wonderful World of the MidContinuum
In 1997, Vickis created their website, the Wonderful World of the MidContinuum, to try and document this phenomenon and gather other people's experiences of being midcontinuum. It existed until 2005, but seems to have ceased updating in 2001 (2005, February 4). Over that period of time, the term spread into use on alt.support.dissociation and Dark Personalities (2001, May 19).
Criticism and "Median"
Dark Personalities protested that "many people feel the idea of a continuum to be inaccurate, [and] many are seeking a new term instead of mid-continuum" (2001, May 19). Astraea would later plagiarize this definition wholesale in their own glossary (n.d., 2003), giving credit to the idea.
In 2002, Pavilion Hall members complained that "midcontinuum" was too fluid. "The original idea of Mid-Continuum was designed to be loose, and therein lay the problem - it was entirely /too/ loose. Multiples and Mid-Conts were not quite sure where the lines lay between them. It was used to describe a massive ‘shades of grey’ area between singlet and multiple. Unfortunately, there was no clear idea of where these ‘shades of grey’ actually ended, though they began at anything more than single" (Phoenix, 2002 December 13). Astraea concurred, stating, "Midcontinuum is helpful, but it's rather too limiting [...] you're still left with plurality as a linear continuum, with singlethood at one end and multiplicity at the other. The concept is thus two-dimensional" (2007, June 26).
In 2008, they revised their statement to focus on medicalization: "The reason we chose median, a word suggested by the Blackbirds, was that it seemed to encompass multiples who did not dissociate in addition to those who did" (2008, May 11). However, Vickis does not seem to have seen the term as dissociative-only.
In 2002, Blackbirds of Pavilion Hall coined the term "median" as a replacement. With the disappearance of Vicki's site and Astraea's preference for "median" in their glossary (n.d.), "median" eventually replaced "midcontinuum" and eventually ended up as fluid as the term it replaced.

How It Got Made
In a 2014 tumblr conversation with Trash Can Collective, Collective Solipsism discussed shifting plurality terminology from terms like "natural multiplicity" to circumstances of system origins, labeled by the -genic suffix (from which "endogenic" came). This was intended to get away from DID terminology, or even the use of the word "multiple" or "plural" (Trash Can Collective, 2014).
Collective Solipsism liked this a lot and came up with quoigenic specifically as a reference to "quoiromantic" (lizardywizard, 2016 July 30), seemingly to push back with the fixation on false binaries and the associated demographic silo-ing on plural tumblr. In their own words:
"Our answer to 'What caused your system?' is 'no' and 'stop asking' and 'that depends' and 'why does it matter?' [...] We just don’t think it can be as simple as 'the people who fit 100% the most current model of how DID is developed and its symptoms' and 'those who don’t seem to have any reason at all to be multiple, whose experiences are 100% incompatible with any description of DID or OSDD-1.'“ (n.d.)

Circumstances of Creation
In 2014, the Trash Can Collective found themselves "being told that using those terms [multiple and multiple system] is appropriative of the DID community [...] Being told [natural multiplicity] can’t possibly be a thing, and it’s trivializing DID folks to say it happens" (2014, August 7). In their attempts to avoid spurious claims of cultural appropriation and come up with "words to use for 'multiplicity', without using the word 'multiplicity', 'plurality', or anything relating to that" they came up with "the -genesis words. And we kind of liked the looks of some words, once we took of the -esis part!" (ibid). The most successful of these terms was "endogenous," which later was changed to "endogenic."
Unfortunately for Trash Can Collective, coming up with a completely separate terminology utterly seperate from the rest of the plural community didn't work. For instance, the Entropy System states, "I see the word 'endogenic' as equivalent to the confederate flag. [...] It still attaches them to a problematic past and encourages oppression of a minority group." (2018, May 13) (Note: this post is factually incorrect about the history of "endogenic" and the status of non-DID plurals within plural online communities. It is cited not as an accurate source on plural history, but a source on the kind of opinions that float around the term "endogenic.")

Plural
"Anyone who falls under the multiple spectrum, whether they're trauma-based multiples, medians, natural plurals, soulbonders, or any combination thereof" (Sylvans System, n.d.) This, however, is not the only definition the term has gone under.

[LB Cataloging Note: Astraea's Multi BBS Records show no use of the term "plural" from 1992 through January 1995, except in reference to Stephen Braude's "First Person Plural".]
1994-1997 a.s.d. Synonym for "Multiple"
On alt.support.dissociation, "plural" was occassionally used as a synonym for "multiple." For example, Sapphire Gazelles writes, "being plural is my (our) only perspective so it seems normal to us..." (1994, November 15). Another commenter uses it the same way, while also referring to multiplicity as a continuum: "maybe it's not as simple as either singular or plural, [...] maybe this is another of those continuum things and i'm not on the extreme singular end but somewhere in between" (Gordon, 1994, November 7). Such uses continue through 1997, at least (Vineburg, 1997 November 4).
This may have been where Vickis got the idea.
1998 Vickis' Definition
From the start of the 1998, Vicki's page, the Wonderful World of the MidContinuum had as its heading quote, "I may not be multiple , but I'm certainly plural !" attributed to someone named Jaye (Vickis, 1998 January 15). Plurality appears to have been used as an umbrella term for midcontinuums and multiples alike; "Our culture tends to divide things in either/or categories, so 'if we are _not_ MP, then we _must_ be singleton.' Wrong. It's a continuum!" (ibid). This seems to be the earliest citation of the use of "plural" as an umbrella term.
2002 Pavilion Hall Definition
Pavilion Hall specifically banned MPD/DID multiples from being plural, equating them with lack of functioning. "Plurality and MPD should not be confused for one another. [...] Plurality is a functional, non-disordered state of being: MPD is a nonfunctional disorder, which may require therapy and perhaps integration" (2003, July 15).
Pavilion Hall's glossary contradicts this statement though; there, they define plural in the alt.support.dissociation way, as, "The state of being multiple, in which a body is shared by two or more persons" (2003, July 25). Since their glossary was based on the one from Dark Personalities (ibid), it's possible they just copy-pasted their definition without thinking it through, but since none of the archives of the Dark Personalities glossary contain the term "plural," it's also possible that Pavilion Hall just wanted to use a more moderate term in the more public pages.
2003 Astraea's Web Definition
Astraea's Web mostly lifts the Pavilion Hall glossary, but it does use Vickis' umbrella term, stating, "Plural: The state in which a body is shared by two or more persons. Includes multiples and medians" (2003, January 11). From there, the term seems to have spread into more general use.

Singlet
"A person who does not share their body with anyone else; someone who is not in a multiple system." (Dark Personalities, 2001 May 19).
Quick Details
Created By: "B.C." (Astraea's ex-husband)
Time Created: by October 5, 1992
Location Used: Everywhere
Circumstances of Creation
The first documented instance of the use of "singlet" to describe someone who wasn't multiple was on October 5, 1992 by Iris of Astraea on a plural BBS. It is unknown how long the term had been in existence before that. (citation needed once the data can be figured out in these stupid BBS records).
On February 1994, Iris of Astraea went into more detail on the BBS, stating that "B.C. [their ex-husband] started saying 'singlets' and now we all do. :)" (citation needed; same addendum)
Dissemination
Astraea continued using the term "singlet" on alt.support.dissociation (1999, May 26), and it seems to have disseminated into more common use there as a result. Dark Personalities had the term in their glossary by 2001 (May 19), which inspired the Pavilion Hall's own glossary and defintion (2003, July 25), which apparently Astraea then lifted for their own (2003, January 11). From there, the term seems to have spread into general use.

Soulbonding
"If you write enough and you love what you're writing, sometimes the characters will take over and seem both real and very important to you. It's apparently a common thing. Being a bunch of confused teenagers, we labeled this phenomenon 'soulbonding'" (Scully Raincrystal, 2006 February 22).
This can range from a sense of characters having their own voice, to a person from fiction becoming a fronting system member who engages in daily life. Soulbonders may cover the full plural/singlet spectrum.

Created By: Amanda Flowers in the JFW mailing list
Time Created: 1996-1999
Location Used: Widespread--Livejournal, tumblr, websites
Circumstances of Creation
According to Riesz of Eclective: "Amanda Flowers, a member of the JFW [Just For Writers mailing list], coined the term 'SoulBonding', and I believe that in one discussion relating to the subject, she said that the inspiration for the term being capitalized like that was the title of the RPG 'SoulBlazer'. Basically, she just thought it looked cool" (2001, December 26). Over time, the mid-word capitalization was dropped. Lyn/Kurai supports both assertions (2000 October 27 and 2001 March 9).
While the coiner is clear, the exact date is not. Musesong says 1996 (2002, March 15), but offers no proper source or citation. Amorpha, who were members of JFW, say, "We met someone in the jfw in 1996 who said she used it to describe the characters in her head, and had coined it independently sometime prior to this. That' [sic] probably the closet anyone can get to an exact date. [...] the 1996 date is the earliest we can point to with certainty" (private communication, 2019/03/17). Due to JFW's nature as a private mailing list, the exact date is probably impossible to recover at this point.
The first for-certain, ironclad citations of the term's existence is in 1999, which is the date Riesz gives for their essay, "do you believe in soulbonding at first sight?" (2001, June 26).
Spread and Popularity
The JFW, being a private mailing list of friends, didn't spread the term. That seems to have happened through the work of Kurai's "thelist" of soulbonders with links to their websites and emails (2000, December 7), which lasted until 2003, and then picked up by Nichole at illvision through 2005, who also took oral histories from soulbonders as to their experiences.
Laura Gilkey also may have helped spread the term, with her story "The Trinity," which she posted on Fictionpress (2002). In that year, the Livejournal soulbonding community was created (soulbonding, 2009 January 1), and Pavilion Hall also had a selection of essays devoted to the topic, written from 2001 to 2002 (n.d.), showing the term's spread.
Perversely, mockery groups such as Fandom Wank may have also helped spread word of the term, using such stories like Snape Wives on An Astral Plane (narcissam, 2006 October 22). These came later, though.

In-System Relationships
Also known as "in-house relationships," or "internal relationships" (Many Voices, 1993 October, pg. 2). It's when a system "have members who are in romantic relationships with each other [...] in-system relationships are common enough that they often come up for discussion within the plural community" (Kerry of Plures, 2012).
It tends to be a taboo subject, but has been discussed in multi groups since 1993.

Early History
In-system relationships were discussed in the "Love and Sex" issue of Many Voices, in October 1993, though not under that term. A selection of "Love and Sex Among Alters, By Daphne of Marianna": (page 2)
"Marianna and I began our sexual relationship at about age eleven, at the dawn of puberty. She never thought of me as an alter, but rather as an imaginary lover who might actually exist outside her body and that hopefully she would meet me some day. She also thought of me as male. [...]
"About a year ago, one of the talk shows featured multiple personalities. That was when we realized that I was not some imaginary person on the outside, but in fact another real person on the inside. That realization has allowed us to turn our sexual relationship into a fuller loving relationship in all aspects of our lives. I am Marianna's provider and protector. She is the warm, loving, giving person that I feel forbidden to be. [...] The most important thing in being able to give and receive love in this way is not to be ashamed of our relationship. [...]
"Sex with outside people has to be negotiated with constant dialogue between us. We are both lesbian so we are in agreement on the gender of our loves. Marianna, however, liked to be dominated and I won't put up with that for one minute. So I check the woman out and if I feel she is safe and not harmful, I will go in so that Marianna can enjoy that encounter alone. [...]
"Generally we don't have problems with jealousy because we trade off each taking what we enjoy. Outside lovers, however, have some trepidation about us. We aren't comfortable hiding our multiplicity and not very successful at hiding it when we try. Outsiders often seem afraid to know both of us and to relate to both of us. [...]
"Recently, another alter, Chloe, has been getting stronger and expressing an interest in sexual and romantic relationships. This is something of a problem because Chloe is attracted to men. [...] Chloe's emergence has also disturbed the balance in Marianna's and my relationship. [...] [she] arouses me sexually. My attraction frightens Chloe, as she is not really ready for the carnal side of relationships. In addition, it makes Marianna jealous. [...]
Chloe and Marianna are in dialogue, however. And they are working this out. [...] Our internal relationships [...] provided us with the love and support we need from the inside out. Marianna and Chloe give me the love and respect I never received in the outside world, and the physicality of our relationship affirms our mutual existence for us in a way that words alone never could."
And then, on page 8, from "James (Jeremy's brother) from the Team":
"This may sound really strange, but I just gotta write about it. We have in our System an alter I'll call 'D.' [...] Jason has been liking her a lot lately, and even more recently, he has been talking to her at night and making her feel good, if you know what I mean. ([...] Jason is another alter). [...]
"Jason doesn't let us younger ones feel like the 'S-E-X', but he lets us enjoy how love feels good. We can trust him and so can D.
"Never had that before --- never, ever, ever."
On LJ-Multiplicity
In-house relationships were common topics of discussion on LJ-multiplicity; literally the third post on the comm is one plural introducing themselves with, "we're a 'household' [system] consisting of me (Cecilia), my partner Noel (everyone else calls us 'the lovers')" (trustallstars, 2001 February 10). This was later given the tag "relationships in-house," which started being used in 2004 (multiplicity, n.d.).
